Speech was given to the ordinary sort of men whereby to communicate their mind; but to wise men, whereby to conceal it.” With all Americans encouraged by nurture and culture to place themselves out of the ordinary, concealment acquires a special attraction.
    If you speak in order to persuade, attending to your wants can only yield a distraction. Your interest lies in attending instead to the wants of your audience. Even emotional expression germinates better at a distance. As long as your audience matters to the making of your utterance, its motivation by your irresistible desire will run counter to its purpose. Step aside and let the passions settle, lest you be forced into a choice between futility and indignity.
